Headway Tyneside has partnered with professional dancers Megan Brown and Aaron Markwell to deliver a dance class for people with brain injury.

These sessions are free of change thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

Why dance?

Moving is great for the body and mind! Dancing may even aid recovery after brain injury, improving balance and coordination, memory and overall wellbeing.

The physical challenges people may face after brain injury will be different for every brain injury survivor, but with the right support, moving your body to music is an accessible activity, with lots of health benefits!

About Megan

Megan is grinning and stretching her arm forwards as she leads a dance class

Megan is a movement artist based in Newcastle. For the last 8/9 years she has developed her community dance practice, working with babies all the way to adults aged 104 – and everyone in between! She works for organisations such as Equal Arts and Company of Others facilitating and leading sessions for older adults 55+ in care settings. She also leads Company of Others Ensemble, a performing group of dancers who all happen to be 60+. Megan aims for her sessions to be open, accessible and fun for everyone involved, allowing you to find your voice and enjoy social engagement.

Megan is currently on maternity leave and we are delighted that Aaron is currently covering her classes.

What can I expect?

An expressive, energetic movement class for adults of all abilities living with brain injury. The session will use a range of dance techniques, music styles and themes to guide you through a fun-filled class. There will be a mix of learning set routines and creating/exploring your own individual movement style. Classes are relaxed and you can take part as you wish.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring a water bottle and wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement. Wear closed-toe shoes or trainers (no sandals).

I am a wheelchair user – can I take part?

Absolutely! All exercises and routines will have a seated and standing versions. As standard, all warm up and cool down exercises are done in a seated position for everyone.
